SHAPE: In most of the ancient cities of the Western-Eastern greek alphabet groups its shape that looked like I was used, while in others, there was no symbol.

SOUND: Phonological research shows that initially, zeta (Z) was pronounced as a double consonant: /zd/. Or according to others: /dz/. The greeks loved using monogrammes for a fast double consonant utterance see also Ξ (ksi), Ψ (psi), Θ (theta), Φ (phi) and X (chi). Today's pronunciation [z] comes from 4th a.e.v. century. Till that time, the sound /z/ was heard when the letter sigma (Σ) appeared before loud consonants. e.g. cosmos is still pronounced [`kozmos]. There is no postalveolar [z] sound in greek (as in french word: je).
