SHAPE: N shape derives from the northsemitic symbol. The small ν came from omitting the left antenna of N. Its shape is the same in all ancient cities of the Western-Eastern greek alphabet groups.

SOUND: The palatalized [ɲ] appears in modern greek only, sometimes before /ia,ie,io,iou/ sounds.
One more variant sound of [n] exists in greek: the velar [n Velar as in sing] called «άγμα» [`aɣma] but occurs not with N, but with Gamma (Γ).

NAME: ETYMOLOGY: From northsemitic (phoenician): nūn = (the) fish.
NAME: SPELLING: The old polytonic orthography: νUpsilon Perismpomene.

COMBINATIONS: NT [d] or [nd].
DOUBLED: sometimes double occurrence within a word. <νν> was pronounced [nn] till the middle times. After the middle times it is pronounced [n].
