SHAPE: Almost half of the ancient greek cities used the Δ version. Its rounded version D was the shape used by the rest of the cities (the so-called western group). This very D was used as the fourth letter of latin alphabet, where it represented [d].

SOUND: Initial [d] pronunciation started changing to [δ] since a.e.v. times. The digramme NT was used to represent [d]. The tendency to move from closed consonants e.g.[b, d, g] to the fricatives [v, δ, γ] is persistent in the evolution of greek pronunciation.

NAME: ETYMOLOGY: from northsemitic (phoenician): dãlet (or dãleth) = door
